The Institute for Musicology was established in 1974, when the Hungarian Academy of Sciences integrated its musicology and ethnomusicology research programs. The institute moved to the Erdődy-Hatvany Palace in the Buda Castle. The Institute for Musicology owns the Archives for 20th-21st Century Hungarian Music, the Bartók Archives, the Department for Hungarian Music History, the Archives and Department for Folk Music and Folk Dance Research, the Department of Early Music History, the Museum of Music History, and the Library of Musicology. The bequest of composer László Lajtha is a part of the Archives for 20th-21st Century Hungarian Music.
